The first time I saw this trailer on Netflix I knew that it was going to be a movie I had to see. It was a few weeks before the official drop date and I immediately added it to my ‘watch list’ so that I would be notified when it was available. It didn’t disappoint at all. I saw myself in all three main characters and I remember that time in my life before I turned 30 when I was asking myself what I was doing. Dewanda Wise’s wit, Brittany Snow’s hesitation to be assertive in relationships and Gina Rodriguez’s ability to get caught up in being with someone was me and many other women I know at some point in our lives. I loved the plot, that there wasn’t the traditional “happy ending”, but one of the things I loved most was the music!
Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts” has been EVERYWHERE recently, and for good reason it’s a bop! If we’re being honest, that song and seeing Dewanda on the trailer are what really intrigued me. Then I watched the movie and heard classics like “Int’l Players Anthem”, “The Jump Off” and “Dreaming of You” by the late great Selena being sung in a bodega. Whew! The soundtrack was great and I immediately went on the hunt for it on Spotify. I couldn’t find an official one, but I did find a playlist that had just about every song featured in the film. Do yourselves a favor and check out this “soundtrack” and then go watch the movie. Do it for Lakeith’s fine self!
