Hey y’all! Today’s collaborative post makes my little band nerd heart so happy. I actually learned how to play the flute in school, but I have so many friends who have picked up instruments later in life and are self-taught! Playing an instrument is a great skill to have, and nowadays it’s a lot easier to teach yourself.
Many of us can find that we have a little bit of spare time when it comes to the weekends and evenings. Watching TV or films, maybe doing a bit of extra work or reading, can all be great ways to use that spare time effectively. But, learning an instrument can actually be very rewarding. But you may not want to pay out for lessons, and you may not want that added commitment. So is it possible to be self taught? Here are some options to consider if you would like to give this a go.
Find an instrument that suits your needs – One of the first things that you need to do is consider what instrument might be best to try and learn. It could be that you have always like the idea of a particular instrument, or maybe you just want to try something new. It could be a ukulele or a guitar, or maybe something a little more elaborate.
Follow easy to follow guides online – The next thing to think about would be to consider the guides that you can use to help you learn. There are so many methods to try but once of the easiest ways to consider learning is to follow guides and tutorials. You can look at articles online such as the Top 12 Easy Ukulele Songs with 4 Chords (C, G, Am, F) to help you get started. Often these will have been written by either people such as yourself who learned or from experts like teachers. You could also enlist the help of a teacher and attend lessons if you think you might be able to absorb the information quicker as a starting point.
Watch YouTube tutorials – The next thing to think about would be to consider watching YouTube videos. They can be really easy to follow, especially if you are visual story of person. You can follow the guides online and also make a point of taking it step by step, being able to pause the video as you master something in your own time, rather than feeling rushed in a lesson or class.
Chat to music shop owners – Often the hard part of finding the right sort of music instrument ot try and learn or the best way to do it can be overwhelming, so why not take the time to attend music shops physically look at what’s on offer. You can touch and feel the instruments, pick what feels right, and also gain some valuable knowledge from music shop owners. They may be able to suggest some tips and advice.
Enjoy it and just go with the flow – Finally, make sure you enjoy it and go with the flow. This is supposed to be something fun that you can do in your own time, and a chance to learn a new skill. Who knows where is may take you, but it is often a great way to clear your ind and another outlet of creativity to explore.
Let’s hope this has encouraged you to consider teaching yourself a musical instrument.
