A new year, a new Pentatonix holiday album. I don’t know if y’all know this, but they’re one of my favorite a capella groups. I’ve loved them since they were on ‘The Sing-Off’, and I’m so happy that they’ve gone on to see commercial success because they deserve it. They’re BEYOND talented and the fact that they can make such amazing music with just their mouths never fails to leave me stunned. They recently dropped their latest holiday album, and I not only added it to my general ‘Christmas Mix’ playlist on Spotify, but I’ve been spinning the album regularly since it came out.
Of course there were the Christmas staples like “Grown-Up Christmas List” with the powerhouse that is Kelly Clarkson, and our favorite from ‘The Grinch’, “Where are you Christmas?”, but there are some unexpected tracks on there that I already love. They covered “Sweater Weather” by The Neighborhood and their arrangement is probably favorite. I used to spin Taylor Phelan’s regularly instead of the original, but this a capella arrangement is BANANAS! There are harmonies I would’ve never thought of and I want to see them do this live.
Then there’s their cover of the tear-jerker from the ‘Prince of Egypt’, “When You Believe”. This song was originally done by two powerhouses, Whitney and Mariah, but Maren and the group holds their own. Y’all please do yourselves a favor and check out this album. And after you listen to it a few times go ahead and check out their other holiday albums. SO GOOD!
