It’s Christmas Eve!! I know that most of you guys are finishing up the last of your grocery shopping, or maybe even picking up the final few gifts or gift accessories before tomorrow. I’m actually at the office for a few hours, which isn’t odd for the industry I work in. In fact, the term “lease holiday” is something I’m quite familiar with. I’m the type of person who uses 99.9% of their vacation days before the end of the year so taking two weeks off at the end of December isn’t something I do. This means that I’m one of the few stragglers in the office on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve.
There are a few good things about working when the office is practically empty, and I wanted to share a few of those and ways to survive those quiet holiday days.
Treat yourself for breakfast – Whether you’re treating yourself to French toast and eggs or bagels and schmear for a leisurely meal while you get your inbox to zero, or someone treats the few employees this is the type of thing that will make these slow days bearable.
Dance/karaoke party – This is actually something I do whether the office is empty or full. Ask any of my co-workers who walk past my desk on a regular basis and they’ll let you know that it’s not uncommon to see me lip-syncing for my life, or if I’m really into it I’ll actually be singing along with the track.
Knock out tedious tasks – You know those files that you were supposed to go through and put up? The ones you’ve been putting off because you know it would take at least two hours to do? Those are perfect for days like this. Put on a podcast, audiobook or holiday mix and get some steps in while you clear off your desk before the new year.
Catch up on your shows – Now I personally can’t do this, but if your office environment is laxer than mine then slow days like this are perfect for getting through your DVR or Netflix queue. It’s no secret that I love those cheesy Hallmark and Lifetime holiday movies, and you could definitely get through 1 or even 2 of those movies or a few episodes of a show on Netflix during a half day.
Clear your files – Physical and digital. Organize your folders, clear your desks, get rid of pens that have no more life left in them. Switch out your calendars too! What better way to start a new year than with a clean desk and desktop?
So here’s to short days and long celebratory nights! I hope y’all enjoy your Christmas Eve and that you spend the rest of the holiday season enjoying time with your loved ones!!
