I’ve been a busy bee these past few weekends! Between concerts, volunteering, movie dates with my nuggets and more I’ve been on the move! One thing that I did do two weekends in a row was attending a coding event.
The Saturday before last I volunteered with HAULYP at a Hackathon at the Microsoft store in the Galleria. We spent a good part of the day immersing ourselves in STEAM projects and discussing the field with middle and high school students. There were coding activities with Minecraft, robotics and more! It was great to see the students’ eyes light up as they got the result they wanted and it brought me back my elementary and middle school days when we did a bit of coding with Legos. Well long gone are those days. These students were on a whole ‘nother level and I loved it!
I used to think that my generation had a bit of a leg up in coding since we were the generation of customizing Myspace and Xanga pages, but those simple HTML codes were just building blocks of what’s being used now.
This past Saturday I had the chance to attend Flatiron School Coding Workshop, and had so much fun! It was an all ages event and my heart was full of joy when I looked around the room and saw kids as young as my nieces and nephews writing the same code I was writing! Now we didn’t go too deep on Saturday, but we did build art with code (which just so happened to be what the workshop was called). The two-hour workshop was just a sample of what’s offered at the Flatiron School, and it totally made me want to dive deeper into the world of coding with them. They have a few free online courses like the Bootcamp Prep course as well as a Data Science Bootcamp Prep course that are perfect if you just want to dip your feet into this world without making that full commitment and diving in before you’re ready. What’s so great about the Flatiron School is that they offer class both online and in-person. They currently have campuses in New York City, Brooklyn, London, DC and now Houston and I can only see them growing from here. They offer full-time courses as well as part-time ones and have a wide variety for people to choose from. Whether you’re thinking about making a career change or just wanting to learn code in your spare time, there’s a course for you.

The Flatiron School has also partnered with Facebook and the Houston Area Urban League to offer 25 scholarships to their most comprehensive software engineering program ever created! It’s a full-time program running from July 16th-Oct 26th, where students will receive and uncompromising education by passionate instructors who can verify the how successful their previous students were after they finished the program. This is the inaugural program in Houston and it’s the first time that it’s been 100% scholarship based! If this is something that interests you, please fill check out this site for more information about the program and application process.
Coding is an integral part of our lives and now’s the time to learn the language if you haven’t already. Do yourselves a favor and check out the Flatiron School, you won’t regret it!
