Happy new year, y’all! I hope you guys had an awesome and safe evening last night and your year is off to a great start. I know that I usually do resolutions for my first post of the year, but I wanted to do something different this year. I love a good affirmation, long or short, and I feel like this will be my go-to affirmation for the year.
I was introduced to the “one little word” movement last month and it seemed like it popped up everywhere. Planner babes that I follow were talking about it on their Instagram pages, fellow bloggers were tossing ideas around, and even friends were talking about it. I was a bit skeptical at first, not wanting to force anything and was fully onboard with doing the standard new years resolutions until last Friday night.
I was at home watching the Bad Boy ‘Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop’ documentary when something struck a nerve. Diddy played a Nina Simone interview for his artists and she kept talking about freedom, how it couldn’t be described but it could be felt. ‘Fearless’ was another word mentioned in the documentary, and I thought for sure that would be my word of the year.
Then it hit me.
Courage.
Yeah, it’s nice to be fearless but if I’m being honest that’s not 100% me. My goal isn’t to completely lack fear because that emotion stirs up so many other things and I don’t want to distance myself from the brave actions of facing my fears. I want to be courageous. I know that all of my fears won’t go away overnight, so I need the ability to stand and face them. I need the ability to stand tall and strong in the midst of pain.
I’ve been unintentionally courageous this past year and have accomplished so much in my personal, professional and blog life. Imagine how much more successful I could be if I was intentionally courageous? It was courage that led me to pursue a career with a different company. It was courage that led me to step out of my comfort zone and attend blogger events, to attend events as media, to even start a podcast!
It was unintentional courage that urged me to continue to travel by myself, and I can already see the additional passport stamps I’ll be getting with the intentional courage I’ll be exhibiting this year.
I don’t know about y’all, but I’m excited. I’m excited to see what 2018 has in store for me. Are you guys going the traditional resolutions route or are doing a “one little word” as well? I’d love to hear them! Feel free to comment below or tweet me and let me know!
