Today’s post is a different kind of ‘Tuneage Tuesday’ post. Instead of sharing a playlist or episode with you I have a collaborative one highlighting the benefits of music!
Many of us reach for the remote the moment we sit down for the evening. We either head to the black hole of Netflix, or watch whatever we can stand on real-time television. Either way, we crave the comforting noise in the background. And, in some ways that’s understandable. Most of us work hard all day. We’re allowed some downtime, right?
But, watching television is a sure way to waste time and barely notice it going. Once you sit down and switch off, the hours will pass in the blink of an eye.
The good news is, a fresh contender is coming in to take center stage. The music lovers out there already know about the joys of Spotify, and you should take the time to do the same. Instead of turning on your television, why not sit down and listen to your favorite music? Here are a few reasons why it would be a more useful way to spend your free-time.
A true chance to unwind
Often, it’s our minds that need a rest. Sure, it’s nice to sit down for once, too. But, for most of us, our minds do the work. And, when you watch television, you still engage your brain. The work required may be minimal – following storylines, absorbing images – but it exists. By comparison, listening to Spotify allows you to unwind completely. You can lie back, and even close your eyes if you want to. Then, let the music wash over you and do its work through no effort on your part. You don’t have to pay attention. You just need to listen.
Multi-tasking potential
Listening to Spotify can also increase the potential of your evenings. When you watch television, you’re tied to that one task. If you leave the room or try to read a book as well, you’ll sttruggle to keep track. By comparison, music has real multitasking potential. Because it requires less attention, you can still do other things on the side. There’s nothing to stop you picking up a non-fiction read, or getting lost in a fantasy book series. You could even pick up one of the self-help books mentioned in this post and improve your life while you’re at it. If reading isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other options. You could craft while listening, or even settle in for a jigsaw puzzle. Whatever you fancy, music frees you up to do it.
The psychological benefits
It’s also important to note that music offers many psychological benefits. Studies have found that regular listening can improve cognitive performance and reduce stress. Not to mention that it can improve your mood. Television just can’t boast of the same promises.
A final word
No one’s saying that you have to turn the television off indefinitely. But, get into the habit of switching to Spotify for at least half an hour. Extend that to an hour, and then more if you fancy. Before long, this might be your go-to downtime activity.
