Today’s post is another collaborative post about something that’s close to my wanderlusting heart!
For some, skiing is life. It is about jumping in the car after work on Friday evening, driving all night, navigating the hairpin corners as the sun creeps over the mountains, skiing all day for the next two days and then driving back in time to be at work. It is all about the skiing. The thick snow, the rush of wind through your hair and your heart pounding through your thermals. For others, however, they would much prefer their weekend mini-vacation to be about all things luxury.
Now, luxury and cheap are not things that tend to go together, especially with winter-sporting thrown into the mixer. However, you can enjoy some mountain glamor without having to beg your bank manager-slash-spouse for forgiveness after breaking the bank, as (some of) our selections prove.
Meribel, France
It may not be littered with those so rich they wear fur everywhere like in Courchevel, but Meribel is by no means a slouch on the glamor front. It is stunning, it embraces truly gorgeous chalet-style architecture, has that friendly village atmosphere, is surrounded by woodlands and, best of all, is linked to the Trois Vallees ski area. Skiing has to be on the menu, it just does, which is why you should consider booking the Chalet Zybeline in Meribel resort to really swing the weights of luxury back in your favor. Glass ceilings, five-floors fed by a lift, its own bar; this place really will give your Meribel experience the “wow” you want.
Cortina, Italy
This resort is often celebrated as having one of the most delicious backdrops anywhere in the world, and that backdrop is the Dolomites. The skiing here is lovely. However, more and more people prefer to enjoy a spot of shopping – fur, jewelry, antiques etc. – before sipping on expensive champagne at the snow polo. It is the Italian way of life, just way up in the clouds. In terms of where to stay, there is only one real option in our eyes: the Cristallo Hotel Spa & Golf. Five-star. Check. A boast of old-school glamor. Check. Lavish rooms. Check. Room service delivered on silver platters. Check.
Eagle Point, Utah
In terms of skiing, nothing can be more luxurious than having your very own mountain to ski on. To give you the low down in terms of skiing, it gets almost twelve meters of snow a year, has five lifts and forty slopes, all of which is spread across 600 acres. Here comes the real luxury kicker, though, it is available for hire, meaning you can bring as many as 200 guests with you. Either way, it costs $10,000 a day. That’s quite expensive if just you and your boyfriend want to go away for a weekend, but incredibly good value if you manage to get all your Facebook friends to agree on coming.
Klosters, Switzerland
This place gets the seal of approval by the rich, famous and royal, so it certainly gets the seal of approval from us too. In fact, this once little farming village in the mountains got coined “Hollywood on the Rocks” as far back as the fifties. Needless to say, it is luxurious. Regarding where to plonk your head each evening, the Chesa Grischuna Hotel can do no wrong. Trust us on that.
