We are in recovery mode here in the greater Houston area. There are still a few neighborhoods with standing water, but most of the standing water has been drained. Our bayous still need to go down, but people are well into clean-up mode in their homes. Sidewalks are full of damaged furniture and items as well as damaged sheetrock. Cleaning supplies and dehumidifiers are being purchased by the masses and people are not only clearing out their own homes but their neighbors and friends too.
This is not easy work, it’s tiring on the body and mentally exhausting as well. Some people have lost everything, and are throwing out memories along with couches and beds. My baby sister shared a picture on Facebook last week of her holding up her college diploma from Texas State. It might not have seemed like much, but knowing that that framed piece of paper had survived bought her joy even for a short moment. We know that these things can be replaced, but it’s still hard to toss out everything that you’ve worked so hard for.
Music is one of those things that bring people together and gets them moving. I don’t know about y’all, but I love to have it playing while I’m cleaning. It takes my mind off of things and keeps me moving. I created a playlist on Spotify of a few Houston classics and other songs that I hope will bring a smile to someone’s face while during trying times like this. Take a listen below and feel free to share it or comment below and let me know if I should add more songs.
