I know I’ve said this before, but I truly love the way we banded together as Houstonians after Hurricane Harvey. People have been giving even when they’ve lost, they’ve been constantly volunteering at shelters and on clean up crews and even the largest school district in town, HISD saying that this year every student will get 3 free meals every day. That to me is huge! Local entertainers and businessmen and women have gone above and beyond to help people get back on their feet, gain a sense of normalcy in this still chaotic time, and that’s what Friday’s event was all about.
I had the opportunity to attend the H3O Benefit Concert at the Houston National Buffalo Soldiers Museum and truly enjoyed myself. It was as if I couldn’t accept the invitation fast enough when that email came through from LaTorria Lemon and Lemon-Lime Light Media, and I looked forward to it all week. The entertainment lineup was top notch, with Leela James, Phill Wade, Dondria Nicole, Earnest Pugh and quite a few others! It was hosted by Cynthia Bailey and her sister Mallory Bailey from the ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ and a few of the other housewives showed up and showed their support as well!
The music wasn’t even the best part. In addition to providing entertainment to take the survivor’s mind off of things for just a little while, there was some of the most delicious food and pampering stations. In addition to the clothing and other donations at the event there were barbers there giving complimentary haircuts to guys, beauticians styling hair for the ladies, mini makeovers and even massage chairs. I don’t know about y’all, but self-care wasn’t at the forefront of my mind during those 4 days that Harvey was over Houston, so it was nice that these amenities were offered.
There was even a first responder and media lounge for those who worked tirelessly to keep people safe and informed in the midst of the storm. There were drinks, snacks, facials and of course massages and mini makeovers there too. It was the perfect “thank you” for their hard work.
In addition to musicians and television stars there were also local celebrities. Chauncy Glover from ABC 13 was there with some of the boys from his non-profit mentoring program as well!
I know we have a long way to go, but we will not only restore this city back to it’s original glory but we will make it better. We’re hoUSton strong!
