This past Saturday blogger/NYT best selling author/wordsmith Luvvie Ajayi was in Houston and I was one of five hundred people in attendance for her lecture. The Houston Museum of African American Culture had her out as the Spring keynote speaker and we were all blessed by her for a little over 2 hours! This was an event I’d been looking forward to since I found out about it, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.
For those of you who don’t know, Luvvie is truly a gift to us all. I’ve been following her blog for years, laughing and thinking as I read her posts which often came across as a conversation between friends at a coffee shop. Her fresh take on the goings on of this world combined with her humorous nature made easy for me to subscribe to her blog all those years ago and keep me coming back on a daily basis. She’s been writing for years, but got really big when she started doing Scandal recaps and those same water-cooler recaps allowed her to develop relationships with people who have given her the opportunity to take her career to the next level.
This wasn’t my first time seeing Luvvie in person, I met her almost two years ago when she hosted an event for Rosa Regale and Empire, but this was my first time hearing a lecture from her. It was my first time hearing her talk about her life outside of the blog, and she dropped some serious nuggets of wisdom on us. She spoke about how she was able to not only make a career out of writing and social media marketing, but how she was able to do them on her own terms. She spoke about the importance of having a great tribe around you, having mentors (plural) that you can go to who not only teach you things but also learn from you. Luvvie talked about her writing process, and I truly commend her for banging out this book in 5 months. I cannot say that that’s something most can do.
Her book, ‘I’m Judging You: The Do-Better Manual’ made the New York Times Best Seller list it’s first week out, and I can totally understand why. There was so much hype around it, and for a good reason. I pre-ordered it on Amazon and read it twice before writing my review on here. I’ve since read it one more time, and I have doubt that this will be one of those books that I will continue to come back to. I knew I wanted her to sign a copy after the lecture so I ended up doing something I haven’t done since the final Harry Potter book and purchased a physical copy. That’s how much I loved this book, and how much I support this amazing woman. I look forward to seeing what’s next for her, and cannot wait to see what Shonda Rhimes has in mind for the television series they’re developing the book into.

[…] Luvvie’s another millennial who’s making waves! I’ve talked about her on this blog numerous times, but this woman is the truth! She’s been making her rounds as a public speaker this past year and has even started a weekly Facebook vlog in addition to everything else she has going on. Oh, and get used to hearing her voice, she did a voiceover in a recent Nike commercial. So what’s next for Luvvie? She’s teamed up with Shonda Rhimes to bring her best-seller ‘I’m Judging You’ to the small screen and I’m looking forward to that. The sky is the limit for this woman! […]
