This past weekend I went and saw the new Power Rangers movie with some of my nuggets, an aunt and my granny and we all really enjoyed it. I posted on Facebook that I might have been a bit more excited to see the film than the kids, and that was definitely true, but looking around the theater I realized I wasn’t the only one. Of course there were parents there escorting their kids, but I also saw quite a few millennials like myself in there in awe like the younger kids.
This film took me back to when I was my nephew’s age watching Power Rangers after school every day and going to see the first film in theaters. I loved that it touched on the origin of the rangers and that it was so inclusive! I’ve said it before, but representation matters and there was so much diversity in this film! But Power Rangers wasn’t the only form of nostalgia I’ve been experiencing recently. The reboot of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and the reported 18 other Disney reboots in the work have my inner child jumping with glee.
And don’t get me started on all of the old television programming that’s being aired now. Between Splat and MeTV I get to watch just about all of my favorite shows from my childhood. I fall asleep watching ‘Rugrats’ or ‘Doug’ most nights and I even woke up early one Saturday morning to ‘Beakman’s World’! They don’t make television programs like that for kids anymore.
90’s R&B is making a comeback, I’m able to see artists in concert that I was too young to see when they were popular before. Xscape is reuniting, the Bad Boy reunion tour was last year, Lil Mo is talking about coming back and let’s not forget that the Backstreet Boys now have a residency in Las Vegas! What is this 2017 or 2000? I can’t help but do the happy dance.
I know I’m not the only one excited about this sudden resurgence of old shows and music. Comment below or tweet me and let me know your favorite show, movie or musician that’s making a comeback!
