Ask anyone who knows me well and they’ll tell you that I’m a morning person. I wasn’t always that way, but in the past five years I’ve gone from being someone who was most productive in the evenings to being someone who’s up with the roosters in the morning. It was easy to set my schedule when I was in school full time, but when I joined corporate America I knew that I was going to need to get things in check so I could be a productive member of the company. I combined the schedule my mom used to have us on and a few other tips I want to share with y’all today.
At Night:
Shower. I’ve always been a night shower-er. For some reason I’m always super relaxed after my showers and there isn’t much better in life than laying down in a comfy bed after a long shower. Especially if the linen on that bed smells like my favorite Febreeze scent.
Plan your morning. Now this doesn’t mean putting your morning routine in your planner(s), but definitely lay out your clothes for the next day and get your meals together so that all you have to do is grab and go in the morning.
Turn off your electronics. Or at least put them on ‘Do Not Disturb’. I could go on and on about studies proving that phones do more harm than good when it comes to falling asleep. Whether it’s losing track of time while scrolling through our social media apps, or simply just staring at the lit screen it’s bad for you. Try and put the phones down 45 minutes to an hour before you call it a night.
Know yourself and set your alarms accordingly. I’m a one-alarm type of person, but I know that not everyone is. If it takes you 5 alarms to get up all the way then time them accordingly.
Get in bed at a decent hour. Adults need 7-9 hours of sleep every night so this means that if you need to be up at 5AM don’t lie down at 2AM.
Chill out. Studies show that people sleep better when it’s cool in the house, and I don’t know about y’all but I love a chilly house where I can bundle up in my blankets or bundle up under my guy.

In the Morning:
Wake up. Get up and out of bed when your alarm goes off, even if it’s the 3rd or 4th one. Laying in bed will probably lead to falling back asleep, and that’s just counterproductive. You can definitely start slowly, but get moving.
Drink water. I always start my mornings with a cold glass of water. This wakes up all of your organs and I like that better than a cool shower in the mornings.
Pump up the tunes. You know what makes getting ready for your day fun? Dancing and singing. Put on your favorite Spotify playlist and grab your hair or makeup brush and show off your favorite karaoke moves in your vanity mirror.
Caffeine helps too. I’ve been loving the Starbucks DoubleShot Energy Coffees in mocha and white chocolate. I don’t like the taste of most energy drinks, but when I came across these a few weeks ago I was hooked. A single can gives me all of the energy I need for a day and they’re so delicious.
