This month has flown by! I can’t believe that February will be over tomorrow, but I couldn’t let the month go by without talking about how #HellaOnyx this Black History Month has been. Now I know it might not seem like it with everything that’s been going on politically, but on the entertainment side, there have been quite a few wins this month.
Chance the Rapper’s multiple Grammy wins – If you didn’t know who Chance was before this year’s Grammy’s you know who he is now. He won 3 awards, including the coveted Best New Artist award! He was the epitome of #BlackBoyJoy when he accepted his awards and when he gave that phenomenal performance with Tamela Mann, Kirk Franklin, and Donny Trumpet. Chance has been working incredibly hard and I look forward to seeing him in a few months when he comes to the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.
Luvvie got a show deal – I’ve mentioned Luvvie multiple times on here. She’s one of my favorite bloggers and last year she released a book, but not just any kind of book she released a ‘Do-Better Manuel’. I’ve read it twice (and counting) and even blogged about it. Well, this month the news dropped that Shonda Rhimes and ABC Signature Studios acquired the rights for Luvvie’s book and are developing it into a cable comedy series! Luvvie deserves all of the success she’s been receiving, the woman works incredibly hard and has been in this blogging and entertainment game for 13+ years. She’ll be in Houston on April 22nd at the HMAAC for their Spring lecture series and I’ll be there with my favorite Luvvie shirt on.
Black Bachelorette – My jaw hit the floor when I found out that there’s going to be a WOC as the next Bachelorette. I haven’t watched the show in years, and I’ve blogged about why, but I might have to give it another chance this upcoming season. Not only is the new bachelorette Black, but she’s from Texas as well! Now I’m not saying that I’ll watch the entire season, but I’ll definitely give the first few episodes a try.
An unprecedented amount of POC Oscar nominees – I had the biggest grin on my face after seeing the list of nominees for this year’s Oscar awards. There were so many POC nominees, even in the big categories! ‘Fences’, ‘Hidden Figures’, ‘Moonlight’, ’13th’ and ‘I am Not Your Negro’ reflect all kinds of #BlackGirlMagic and #BlackBoyJoy and films like ‘Loving’ and ‘Lion’ are getting their much-needed recognition too! I feel like this has been a year of inclusivity at awards shows and I’m happy with the direction the entertainment industry is moving towards.
**Edit to add – Congrats to Moonlight for their ‘Best Picture’ win, but I think we can all agree that #GaryFromChicago was the overall winner last night**
This is just the beginning; I’m looking forward to celebrating #BlackHistory365 this year!
