This isn’t the first Tuneage Tuesday dedicated to the soulful creature that is Bruno Mars. It’s been about 3 years since the first one, but I felt like it was time for another after he dropped that new single last Friday. I was already giddy and grooving to “24k Magic” and the live version of “Chunky” from SNL when he blessed us with this 90’s R&B-esque track.
Y’all.
Bruno blessed us!
I had this song on repeat for about 2 hours at work (sorry for those of you who follow me on Spotify and saw that repeating) and I don’t regret one single minute of it. It instantly reminded me of the late 80’s and early 90’s R&B and my soul screamed yes. Y’all know what I’m talking about too. That Shai “If I Ever Fall in Love”, LL Cool J “I Need Love”, Janet Jackson “Let’s Wait Awhile”, Guy “Let’s Chill Vibe”. In fact, I’m hoping he throws it back when he does the visual for the track and gives us that Boyz II Men/Az Yet type vibe. I want the old school film look and over-the-top gold jewelry. Ugh! I can’t wait!
I initially thought this was a new sound for ol’ Bruno, but he’s been hinting at his love for 90’s R&B for a while now. “Our First Time” and “When I Was Your Man” should’ve been obvious to me before now but they weren’t. They all but New Jack swang.
Now, I know that there are some of you out there who have no clue what I’m talking about so I’m going to share this amazing-ness with you. I’ve compiled a few of my favorite Bruno tracks into a playlist and I’m also posting the Youtube clip of “Chunky” from SNL since he hasn’t released it as a single. Take a listen below and say a prayer to me that he sticks to the release date that’s on Apple Music and drops this album on the 18th.
