I’ve always been a huge advocate for self care; and in light of everything that’s been happening recently I feel like now’s the best time for me to share some of my favorite self-care activities in Houston.
Unplug. This means log off social media, even if it’s just for a day. All of your friends’ engagement, wedding, baby, etc pictures will be there for you tomorrow. I don’t Facebook, Twitter or Instagram are shutting down any time soon so all of those status updates will be around for you to like tomorrow.
Shake your groove thang. Whether that’s hitting up your local bar or trying out a new Salsa class at Omni Salsa, dancing releases endorphins which makes you happy. I’ve never seen a grumpy person at a dance studio. Even people who have two left feet are having a good time.
Enjoy a show. Concerts, musicals, plays, you can throw a stone and hit a production in Houston this summer. Between the House of Blues, Warehouse Live, Toyota Center, Revention Center, Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, Hobby Center, you get my drift. And if you’re looking for something cheap or free to do the Miller Outdoor Theater is the place for you. Their calendar is full of summer shows, from movie screenings, concerts and stage plays.
Pamper yourself. Make it a spa day and get mani/pedis at your local salon. My step-mom introduced me to a new one that I love and I’ve since introduced it to other people. If you’re looking for a new salon near the medical center you should check them out. It’s Nailbar & Spa and it’s at Buffalo Speedway & W Holcombe. I was also introduced to Kings Spa, a dry/wet sauna in Bellaire that offers day passes to their facilities for $20 and reasonably priced massage packages on top of that. You honestly can’t beat their prices and services.
Workout. I’ve recently gotten into yoga, but you could take a spin class (I’ve heard good things about SoulCycle), a class at Orange Theory (one of best friends raves about that place all the time), or go hunting for Pokémon with the new game Pokémon Go. That game seems to have caught on like wildfire! I haven’t signed up yet, but I have friends who have and have been combing the city trying to catch ’em all since last week.
Remember that it’s perfectly okay to get out and enjoy your life during chaotic times like this. You can “stay woke” and be tired of it all at the same time so you have to make sure that you take care of yourself. What are some of y’alls favorite methods of self-care? Feel free to comment below or reach out to me on Twitter or Facebook.
