It seemed like every time I turned on the TV last week I was bombarded with stories rooted deeply in hatred and entitlement. There was the local story of a guy killing his ex-girlfriend/mother of his children (along with her current boyfriend) after seeing a social media post featuring the kids and their babysitter. There was the conviction and sentencing (if you even want to call it that) of Rapist Brock Turner followed by the sickening letters from his mother and father, the murder of a pop star on the rise and the other senseless act in Orlando. All of these acts might’ve happened with different weapons, but in the end they all happened for the same reasons. Hatred and Entitlement.
Entitlement led the Darrell Mitchell to kill his ex-girlfriend/mother of their children. If he couldn’t have her, no one would.
Hatred led him to kill her new boyfriend because of their relationship.
Entitlement was one of the reasons rapist Brock Turner raped his victim last year; if he was anything like many other rapists he probably thought he had a “right” to her body and could do whatever he pleased.
Entitlement led his father to write that sickening letter and not once mention the fact that his son actually raped his victim and it wasn’t “20 minutes of action”. Entitlement was also behind that father not once mentioning the victim.
Entitlement is one of the reason behind the judge deeming that prison would be too “damaging” on rapist Brock Turner…as if his assault wasn’t damaging to his victim.
Entitlement is what led rapist Brock Turner’s mother to write a letter just as terrible as her husband. Miss me with that bull, ma’am.
Hatred had to be behind the murder of Christina Grimmie. I can’t imagine anything else could be behind such a senseless act against such a bright light. She was so talented and was just gaining the momentum in her career, and her light was snuffed from this earth. So sad.
Hatred and entitlement were behind the shooting at Pulse nightclub. Whether it was the hatred of the fact that his victims were gay, or if the stories that the media have been spinning are true and the killer was gay himself it could’ve been self-hatred or jealousy that led him to do what he did. And it was entitlement that led him to believe that he had the right to end the lives of 49 people for just being. He didn’t make it out alive, so we’ll never know every reason why he did what he did but I’m pretty sure hatred and entitlement were behind it.
Hatred led Donald Trump to say what he did about the mass shooting on Twitter. And honestly, he shows his entitlement every time he speaks. Whether it’s about building walls, kicking people out of the country, shaming women, disrespecting minorities, etc. It’s truly disgusting.
Hatred and entitlement rear their ugly heads over and over and the only way for us to get rid of them is to love. Love unconditionally. Love continuously. Love hard. If there’s anything that the past week has taught us it’s that this nation, no this world, needs more love. I’m turning the comments off for this post and I’m going to encourage y’all to go out there and love.
