I know that I touched on this mixtape last Friday, but it honestly deserves it’s own post. I feel like I’ve become a bit of a bandwagon fan for Chance the Rapper. I’ve heard him on other people’s songs (ie Kehlani’s “The Way”, Bieber’s “Confident” and BJ the Chicago Kid’s “Church”) and liked his verses but I never really just sought out any of his music. All of that changed last week when I listened to his new mixtape, Coloring Book.
I didn’t know whether I should start praising and worshipping or milly rocking when it came to this mixtape. His delivery is so unique and the way he weaves scriptures in his verses is awesome! I’ve listened to the entire thing at least a dozen times, and I can’t pick just one favorite. The first track, “All We Got” sounds like a continuation of Kanye’s “Ultralight Beam” and it just gets better from there. “No Problems” has a super catchy hook and made me think of the scene in ‘Straight Outta Compton’ when Ice Cube came to the record label and raised hell because they wouldn’t cut the check for the money he earned. “Blessings” has the simplest melody that you can’t help but sing along. My head automatically starts nodding when “Angels” comes on and “Juke Jam” has Bieber channeling his ‘Purpose’ days. There’s so much live instrumentation on this mixtape and my inner band nerd is so happy about that. And I don’t even know where to begin with the greatness of “How Great” is. The choir singing a gospel song I grew up listening to and singing in church with Jay Electronica in the mix. Kirk Franklin coming out of nowhere and just bringing it home. This is just a great mixtape!
Please please please check it out on Apple Music or find someone who has it and listen to it. It’s worth the listen. Oh! And if you like chopped and screwed music one of my friends, DJ AudiTory has you covered.
Edit to add – Spotify just added the mixtape to their collection so I’ve swapped out the playlist. Y’all can check it out on there. Please do!
