About a month and a half ago I found out that one of my girlfriends hadn’t seen ‘Clueless’ so a few of us got together and had an old fashioned Girls Night In with a few movies and the most delicious dinner! Thank goodness Meg owned ‘Clueless’ on DVD so that none of us had to rent or buy it, but I don’t think any of us considered the fact that it might be on Netflix.
I’ve been a Netflix subscriber for a few years now, but I don’t think I take full advantage of it. I’m loving all of the original content that have like ‘House of Cards’ and ‘Orange is the New Black’, but I haven’t really paid much attention to all of the great movies they have streaming online. I did some searching through their library and compiled the ten of the best chick flicks they currently have streaming for those nights in with your girls and a few bottles of wine.
Clueless – The classic 90’s flick with awesome one-liners like “Rolling with the homies” and “You’re a virgin who can’t drive”.
Legally Blond – One of my favorite girl power movies! I love Reese Witherspoon and this is one of my favorite movies by her.
Beyond the Lights – This one is a bit more recent. I’ve been a big fan of Nate Parker’s since ‘Pride’ and ‘The Great Debaters’ and to be honest he was the main reason why I watched this movie. He plays a police officer who falls in love with a pop star who’s crossed the line in her career and has lost her own voice. Guga Mbatha-Raw plays the pop star and she honestly stole the show. She’s fairly new to Hollywood, but I can already see that she’s going to have a great career ahead of her.
The Holiday – I don’t know how to express my love of this movie in words. Between the cast, the script and the settings this movie is just one of my favorites! This was the first time that I saw Jack Black as a love interest, as something other than a funny guy and the fact that he was paired up with the lovely Kate Winslet made it that much better. I love this movie!
The Prince & Me – This movie came out around the time that Julia Stiles was still the “It Girl” for teen RomComs. This is the classic “meet a guy, fall in love, find out he’s royalty, deal with the backlash of being with him and not being royalty but choosing to stay because you love him” story.
Save the Last Dance – I told y’all, Julia Stiles was the “It Girl” for teen RomComs. This was the movie that introduced us to Kerry Washington, made me fall in love with Sean Patrick Thomas and as an adult made me realize just how much they got away with saying in a PG-13 movie in 2001. MTV really pushed the envelope with a few of those lines. Oh, and so many one-liners! Shout out to Fredro Starr for that “Not everyone can have a 10.0 GPA and get into Georgetown like you, Derek!” line. I want to know what kind of IB program their school was offering if Derek had a 10.0 GPA.
Coming to America – See above, but with the comedy of Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall. Oh! Fun fact, Vanessa Bell Armstrong (the woman who was originally supposed to marry Eddie) recently tried on the costume she wore when she hopped on one foot and barked like a dog and it still fit and she still looked great in it!
Crossroads – For such a B movie they had a lot of heavy hitters in the cast. Classic Britney, Anson Mount, Dan Aykroyd, Kim Cattrall, Taryn Manning before ‘Orange is the New Black’ and Zoe Saldana before she made the terrible mistake of signing on to do the Nina Simone movie. Bonus points to Britney for doing like half the soundtrack to this movie.
Rent – This was one of my favorite Broadway shows, so I was elated when they released it as a movie in 2005. So many great love stories intermingled with songs that won’t get out of your head, and some of the cast in the movie were even in the original Broadway cast!
Nanny Diaries – Chris Evans & Scarlett Johansson were in this RomCom before they became Avengers. Alicia Keys played her roommate and the little boy that she took care of was the cutest. I don’t want to spoil anything for y’all, but I shed a real tear when started cry when Scarlett’s character had to move on. Oh, and I actually watched this movie yesterday while I was twisting my hair.
What are some of y’alls favorite movies to watch on Netflix? I’d love some more suggestions for our next girls night in.
Oh, congrats to the winner of my MS Office 2016 giveaway! I’ll be contacting you soon, Brittany. Thank you to everyone who entered, and stay tuned because I’m already planning my next giveaway.
