My Mexico vacation was much needed and very much enjoyed! It was actually supposed to happen last Fall, but scheduling conflicts led to us pushing it back to February and looking back at it, I’m happy we did.
We decided to make a long weekend of it and flew out early Saturday morning. I didn’t get much sleep the night before, but I honestly didn’t mind. I had a GNO with some ladies from work and it was worth the three hours I got the night before my flight; besides I could always sleep on the plane. I’d originally booked my seat so that I’d have an entire row to myself, but due to cancelled flights the day before it ended up being a full flight. I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to get any rest having someone sitting so close to me, but I was wrong. I slept so hard that I missed breakfast!
We had a brief layover in Mexico City, only an hour and a half, but I’m happy we had that time between our flights. We had to go through customs and another security check and it gave me just enough time to gate check my suitcase once more. Apparently my purple carry-on was a bit too big for my first flight. I’ve been using that suitcase for years and there have been a few times that I’ve had to gate check it. AeroMexico’s gate check was a bit different than every other gate check I’ve ever done. I usually give it to them right before I board the plane and my luggage will be waiting for me right when I deplane or they’ll send it directly to my final destination if I have a connecting flight, but it wasn’t like that at all. I had to go to baggage claim in Mexico City and grab my luggage and check it again! My luggage almost got left in Mexico City, y’all! I didn’t even notice that it was sitting at baggage claim until another passenger from my first flight said something.
We ended up making it to Cancun without a hitch after that confusion and the check-in at our resort went fairly smooth. I was greeted with a cucumber lemonade and while it was a combination I would’ve never thought to try, it’s not one I wouldn’t turn down in the future. It was really refreshing!! We ended up staying at the GR Caribe by Solaris and I feel like I can’t say enough nice things about the property! It was absolutely gorgeous! It’s one of the many all-inclusive hotels on Zona Hotel strip and it’s fairly close to the airport. The sister property Royal Solaris was right next door and we got to use the amenities there as well as the ones on our property. That meant more restaurants, a mini waterpark, a bigger beach, a spa and more nightly entertainment. We definitely took advantage of those perks.
We ate at a different restaurant for every meal except breakfast and I took advantage of the spa services there. My hour massage included some time in the sauna as well as the jacuzzi and I left feeling refreshed! I let a few waves get the best of me, but I survived and even went out to Senor Frogs the same night!
We decided to do an excursion our last full day there and did a catamaran cruise to Isla Mujeres. We got a great deal on the cruise and it was all-inclusive! All the rum and Mexican beer I could drink, and the boat’s chef made the most delicious fajitas for lunch!
Overall the trip was a lot of fun and I think we plan on making it an annual one. We met people at the resort who’ve come back every year for 10+ years, we even came across a couple that’s been coming for 28 years!
I’m telling y’all, my wanderlust is real! I’ve already booked my next vacation to Vancouver (I leave next month) and my cruise in August! Do y’all have any upcoming travel plans? Have any of you been to Vancouver? I’m looking for tips and suggestions for that trip.
