I’m sure y’all have seen the most recent controversial selfie Kim Kardashian posted on Instagram. She was nude (with black bars covering her “naughty bits”) and she captioned it with something like “I have nothing to wear”. Now this is nothing we haven’t seen before, and I’m honestly not shocked by it, but what I am shocked about is the post she had on her blog the next day…which just so happened International Women’s Day.
After celebrities like Bette Midler and Chloe Grace Moretz chided her on Twitter, telling her that people are tired of seeing her naked (Bette) and that she should be a better role model for young girls and let them know that they can offer more to the world than their bodies (Chloe) Kim fired back on Twitter. Some might even say that she clapped back since she mentioned something about Bette trying to fake be her friend by sending her gifts a few months ago and now she’s making this statement.
Now I do agree with Bette’s comment. We’ve seen Kim naked before and we’re not shocked by it anymore. We get it, she has a great body and was able to bounce back pretty quickly after giving birth and she wants to show off but we (the general public) are tired of seeing her naked. If she wants to show us something we haven’t seen before, swallow the camera. At this point we’re 14 seasons deep into KUWTK and we’ve been there for child births, DNA tests, grow spurts, divorces, marriages and everything in between! I feel like the general public is now part of that clan with all the access we have and nothing they do can shock us anymore. Show us something new or keep it moving along. That’s what I interpreted from Bette’s tweet.
Chloe’s tweet was something completely different. Her comment was one that was repeated numerous times on Twitter and other social media platforms. She said that as a role model for other young girls and women Kim should be mindful of what she posts. There were also tweets chiding Kim for posting herself that way because she’s a wife and a mom and should act accordingly, but those didn’t come from Chloe they came from the random Plain Janes. Kim called bull in her blog post and I agree with her on that. I’m not saying that every woman should post nude selfies, but if a woman wants to flaunt her body she shouldn’t be told that she can’t because she’s a wife or mom. In fact, I thought the whole purpose of International Women’s Day was to bring awareness to the fact that as women we have the choice to do what we want with our bodies and lives. Who decided that it was obscene for a woman to be topless, but not a man? I’ve seen numerous pictures of Chris Hemsworth shirtless and no one opened their mouths complaining about him being a father and a husband. The same goes for Brad Pitt, Channing Tatum, James Marsden, Eddie Cibrian, Matt Bomer, etc. All of those men are currently married or have been married and have kids. Why are women held to different standards as soon as they become a spouse and parent? Why are our breasts sexualized when they were intended to be life-giving? What makes our nipples obscene, but not a man’s? I think that’s what Kim was getting at, or at least that’s what I took from it. Once again, I’m not saying that we should all post nude selfies (with modesty bars or without them) online, but confidence can be displayed in other ways. Kim is proud of her body and how she’s birthed and nurtured her children, she even mentioned that her husband is too. She shouldn’t be slut-shamed (honestly no one should, especially since men are given a pat on the back and women are chastised…but that’s another post for another day) for posting something Channing Tatum has posted a million and one times.
Like I said, I partially agree with Kim. She has the right to be proud of herself and full of confidence to make the choice to do what she did. I just think that Bette is also right and that we as the general public are tired of seeing it from Kim and her family.
