I just hit the lotto!

 

I’m kidding, I didn’t win the lottery and I definitely wouldn’t (immediately) tell you guys if I did. I didn’t even play the lottery. I’ve been watching this lottery mania that’s taken over the country over the past week in shock. People are going crazy, buying up Powerball tickets left and right. The convenience store on campus even has two lines now, one for people purchasing goods in the store and another for people buying Powerball tickets. Crazy! The other day the attendant working asked me if I wanted to buy a ticket and I politely declined and informed him that I had a better chance of getting pregnant without a uterus than winning the Powerball. I don’t know what’s come over people, there’s a 1 in 292 million chance of winning the big prize, but people are spending hundreds of dollars playing. In fact, I saw a story on the news that said that there’s a way to guarantee you’d hit by spending over $500 million and choosing every possible combo. With this jackpot you’d probably break even after taxes, but you can’t possibly buy all those tickets within the time frame.

 

Then there’s this beauty that’s been floating around various social media sites.

 

 

Umm, someone needs to check their math. It would come to about $4.33 per person, not $4.33 million. That wouldn’t even be enough to get my favorite meal from Whataburger! Now I know I said that I don’t play the lottery like that, but if I did and if by some miracle I hit the big one here are a few of the things I’d spend the money on.

 

Ten percent for tithes off top (after Uncle Sam gets his taxes of course)

Paying off my student loans and my siblings’ student loans

Set up college funds for the nuggets and a trust for them to live on

Pay off my parents’ home

Purchase a home for myself

Go on a month long vacation (I’m long overdue and I’m really looking forward to Mexico next month)

Giving back to Planned Parenthood and AIDS research, especially in Texas

 

Now that’s just a drop in the bucket of things that I’d do with all of that money. Oh, I can tell you one thing I wouldn’t do with my winnings. Bail a no good boyfriend out of jail multiple times. Have y’all heard about that story out of North Carolina? This gullible woman has spent over $20 million of her $188 million ($88 million after taxes) winnings bailing her no good boyfriend out of jail not once, not twice but three times! That couldn’t be me and wouldn’t be me!

**Edit to add: It looks like there were 3 big winners who hit all 6 numbers and at least 4 people won $1 million (maybe even $2 million) here in Texas.  So how does that work?  Do they take the $1 million prizes out first and then split the rest amongst the 3 big winners?  Inquiring minds want to know.  Oh, and I also want to know how much these big winners spent in total for their tickets?  Was it worth the investment?**
