The terrorist attack in Paris brought a spotlight to the city and countries all over the world showed their support in numerous ways. Some lit their capital and city hall buildings red, white and blue (the colors of the French flag) like Houston, others went completely dark like the Empire State Building. The hashtag ‘Pray For Paris’ was tweeted millions of times, and Facebook even launched a temporary French flag profile picture overlay.
But with all of the support came all of the negativity. People complained that we were so busy showing our support to Paris that we didn’t acknowledge Japan, Nigeria, Syria…etc. Well I’m here to say this: I can care about more than one thing at a time.
I can post a #PrayforParis picture on Instagram/Twitter/Facebook and actually pray for Paris, the victims of this deadly crime and their loved ones who have to continue on.
I can pray for those affected by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
I can pray for those affected by the Nigerian bombing last month.
I can pray for those killed in the Kenyan attack earlier this year.
I can pray for the people who perished and the families that were left behind after the Beirut suicide bombing.
I can voice my opinion and side with those in Mizzou who are fighting to end this racial discrimination.
I can continue to let people know that #BlackLivesMatter, no matter what we continue to see in the media.
I can vote for laws like Prop 1 here in Houston that should have passed (but that’s another post for another day).
I can stand with fellow women and fight for our rights to have a say with our bodies, and I will continue to do so.
I can care about multiple things at one time!!!
I’m so sick of reading the “well what about this?” and “what about that?” comments on Twitter and Facebook. We as humans are capable of doing more than one thing at a time, so let us! Don’t be mad that I didn’t include Beirut in my Paris post, be mad that we have to talk about the situations at all. Be mad that selfish people committed terrible acts and we’re left dealing with the aftermath. BE MAD ABOUT THAT!
