On Saturday Lifetime aired their Aaliyah biopic and I (along with many many other people) have so many questions and concerns. Backstory: The movie was originally supposed to star Disney star Zendaya but she backed out once it came out that Aaliyah’s family was against the film being made. That should’ve been a sign right there. Well they went ahead and made it anyway with Alexandra Shipp, the girl who had the lead role in Drumline 2 and the movie was terrible! Lifetime didn’t get the rights from Aaliyah’s family to use any of her music or her voice so they had Alexandra sing (another mistake) and only used covers that Aaliyah did and “Journey to the Past” from ‘Anastasia’.
LIES!!
I’m not sure what R. Kelly did to piss off Wendy Williams, but half of the film was focused on their relationship and I was disgusted. I know it happened, but Aaliyah’s life was so much more than her relationship with Robert. They didn’t even mention DMX or Ginuwine, didn’t mention ‘Queen of the Damned’ by name and miscast just about everyone!! Missy and Timbaland were skinny, Dame Dash was a full foot taller than he actually is, so many things wrong!
I didn’t watch the movie in one sitting, I’d gone to a play earlier in the evening and out to a bar afterwards so I started it around 2:30AM on Sunday and watched an hour of it before just giving up and calling it a night. I woke up later on Sunday morning and finished watching it and I live-tweeted it all. Check out my tweets below.
