I haven’t done a ‘Tuneage Tuesday’ in a long time, so I knew that this had to be a special edition. I had a mini Stevie Wonder Spotify concert at work on Friday and “All I Do” came on. I don’t know what it is about that song, but it immediately reminds me of my mom. I repeated it a few times and there was a smile on my face. It’s been 11 years since my mom passed and there are times that I am brought to tears just thinking about it; then there are times like Friday.
My mom loved to sing and dance, and she could sing very well! Saturdays were our “clean up the house” day and she would wake me and Mica up bright and early and we’d clean the house while dancing to jazz music or some old school tracks. Norman Brown, Najee, Earth, Wind & Fire, The Commodores, The O’Jays and Stevie Wonder were on regular rotation in the house. Mica and I knew so many songs that were older than us, and we didn’t even mind it! It was just fun to dance and sing along with our mom.
Now there are songs that still bring tears to my eyes after all of these years, “Alabaster Box” by Cece Winans and “Najee’s Theme” being two of them; but not “All I Do” by Stevie Wonder. That song brings me back to shuffling while vacuuming or shimmying while wiping down the mirror in the bathroom. That song brings my mother’s smile to the forefront of my mind and for that I will always thank Stevie Wonder. Take a listen below.
