Tuneage Tuesday: Five Reasons why 90's R&B is better than R&B out now

I wanted to focus on an entire genre this week instead of one particular song/artist/album. I don’t know about you guys, but I love 90’s R&B. I have a Spotify playlist dedicated solely to it and another playlist on my iPod for it. I don’t know what happened between 1999 and now, but R&B music is different, and worse. Here are my top 5 reasons why 90’s R&B is so much better than the music people call R&B now.
[1] It was actual R&B music and not the hip-hop fused music that’s out now.

“Lay your head on my pillow”, “Stay” (by Jodeci not Rihanna), “Candy Rain”, “End of the Road” are just the tip of the iceberg that are classic R&B songs from the 90’s that these songs nowadays can’t even touch!
[2] Boy bands that could sing and actually did.
Back then we had groups like Boyz II Men, Blackstreet, Jodeci, Toni Tony Tone, After 7, Dru Hill, New Edition, the list goes on!

These were groups of men who actually sang and danced their butts off!
[3] Speaking of the guys…
Whitney, Mariah, Brandy, Monica, Shanice, Tamia…so many of these women were known by their first names because they were/are just that talented!

“I have nothing”, “I wanna dance with somebody”, “I wanna be down”, “Emotions”, “I love your smile”, “Stranger in my house” are all songs that will never get old.

[4] Tyrese was still that kid with the facial piercings who got discovered by Coca Cola for singing on a bus.

Long before he became a self-proclaimed “motivational speaker” on Twitter.

I still say someone needs to take away his Twitter and Facebook accounts.

Whenever I start any of my 90’s R&B playlists I always play this song first.
