When Helene mentioned that she was going to do this link-up last Thursday I knew that I had to participate. I like a little bit of everything so I’m going to ask y’all to forgive me in advance if this list is all over the place.
Almost is Never Enough – Ariana Grande
I am absolutely obsessed with this song. Her voice is angelic and this is what a duet should sound like. I didn’t really pay attention to Nathan before this song, I know he’s in the group The Wanted but I didn’t know he could sing like this until I heard this track. There are so many other Ariana Grande songs I could add to this list, but I’m just going to leave it at this one since it’s my favorite by her.
305 To My City – Drake
This wasn’t a single off of the album…yet, but it’s one of my favorites! I loved watching him do this live and it’s usually the first song I play when I turn the album on.
Amnesia – Justin Timberlake
This song actually just started playing on my Spotify playlist. This is another one of those instances where I could go through and name 12 songs by him to put on this list, but this one sticks out the most because of the B-side of it. It really seems like Justin and Timbaland can do no wrong when they get in the studio together. This is another one that isn’t a single…yet, but if he knows what’s good for him he’ll make it a single.
My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light ’em Up) – Fall Out Boy
I’m so happy FOB is back and with this song they came back with a bang.
Power Trip – J. Cole & Miguel
I love this song. I love that J. Cole stayed authentic to himself, I applaud him and a few of these other “new” rappers for not rapping about things that they don’t know anything about just to sell records. And Miguel’s voice…gosh. He sounds the same live too!
Save the Night – John Legend
I wracked my brain for a solid 5 minutes trying to figure out which John Legend song I wanted to add to this list. He had so many good ones this year, this album was actually my favorite by him. I think that this song embodied how great ‘Love in the Future’ was.
All the Way Home – Tamar Braxton
We waited and waited for this album to be released and we weren’t disappointed when she dropped it this fall. Tamar has an amazing voice and I’m happy that she now has the proper backing to get her music out to the masses. I see her sticking around for a long time.
Holy Grail – Jay-Z & Justin Timberlake
I wasn’t too thrilled with all the lyrical content on this album, I think the production is what made it how good it was; but this song stood out. I’m kind of biased because of Justin, but even without him the was really catchy and was a Summer anthem.
Blood on the Leaves – Kanye West
This was not Kanye’s best album…not even top 3, but I loved this song. Especially when he performed it at an award show earlier this year.
Heart Attack – Demi Lovato
This is one of those songs that you couldn’t help but sing along to. Demi’s voice is amazing and I’m happy that she’s still around making hits.
We Can’t Stop & Wrecking Ball – Miley Cyrus
Say what you want about Miley, but the girl had a big year. She dropped a new album, ended her engagement and even cut her hair! Hate her or love her she was on your mind and so were these songs.
Mary Go Round – Conor Maynard
Okay, so according to Youtube this song actually came out in 2012, but his album wasn’t released here in the states until 2013. Conor’s been dubbed the UK’s version of Justin Timberlake and I can see why. His songs are catchy, he’s adorable and he can actually sing. I hope to hear more from him in the upcoming years.
Royals – Lorde
Her voice is unique and so is her look, and this is a song you couldn’t escape this year.
Come Round Soon (Live at the Variety Playhouse) – Sara Bareilles
This song technically came out 6 years ago, but she recently started doing this version of it and I’m so mad that I couldn’t find a studio recording of it on Youtube. They have the Live at the Variety Playhouse album on Spotify and that’s how I’ve been listening to it. I love this version, so much that it’s probably one of the top played songs on my Spotify feed.
I could probably go on for another 15 songs, but I’m going to limit the list here. What were your favorite songs from this year? Link up and let us know!
Helene in Between says
wow, such great picks (although i disagree about holy grail- it was on my worst list!! haha!) but i do love lorde and miley and so many of these!
