I went and saw this movie as a matinee yesterday with my friend Megan and I absolutely loved it! It didn’t look like much time had passed with the cast, they looked great! The wardrobe was on point and it was a very realistic storyline. I’d read reviews (not spoilers) by bloggers who’d gone to see advanced screenings and every single one of them said to bring tissues because it was a tear-jerker. I should’ve listened. I shed some real tears during quite a few parts of that movie.
I was so happy to see the final numbers today when I checked online…until I saw what one particular author for USA Today had to say.
Race-themed film?! Really?! ‘Crash‘ was a race-themed film. You could even say that ‘Remember the Titans‘ was race-themed and I’d give you that. But this movie? A movie about a set of friends who just so happen to be black catching up and dealing with everything that’s happened in their lives in the past 14 years is not a race-themed movie. I think this particular author was afraid to say the word “black”. Ugh! I guess they tried to cover their behinds by changing the title to this:
Diverse how? It was a movie full of black people and Eddie Cibrian. How diverse is that? I really wish I would’ve screenshot the article before they changed it again, but they said something about “predominately black casts have been hot sellers at turnstiles this year” and then originally referenced ‘The Butler’, ‘Fruitvale Station’ and ’12 Years a Slave’. Yes, please compare this uplifting story to more heavy black films of the year. The author, Scott Bowles has since removed ’12 Years a Slave’ from the comparison list and even removed the block-style list completely. I really wish I would’ve screenshot the article. And I’m not even going to get started on the fact that every preview for The Best Man Holiday was for a black film. I’ve never seen so many before a movie; and it seemed like 3 of them were Kevin Hart films.
I digress, this started off as a review for a really good movie that I recommend you guys go see, and while you’re at it grab the soundtrack!
