I took my braids down on Saturday and after I washed my hair on Sunday I got to thinking about the journey my hair’s gone through.
I decided to stop putting relaxers on my hair in 2007 and put the last one on in December 2007. Since then I’ve been embracing my natural locs. These pictures range from senior year of high school to present day.
That last picture was from Sunday after I finished washing and detangling my hair. When straightened it falls below my shoulders, my struggle with shrinkage is real. Going natural was one of the best decisions I ever made in my life. Chuck and I decided that if we have a daughter we won’t perm her hair. If she wants to make that decision to put those chemicals in her hair she’ll have to do it herself, and it won’t even be an option until high school. Looking back I wish my mom would’ve given me that same option. My hair has always been long and healthy, but I think that it would’ve been even longer if I never started getting perms. I don’t think our parents knew any better, but now that we do we’re going to do better.
Girl, I feel ya. My Momma chopped all my hair off when I was a baby. I got my first perm at 3 years old. Had my hair break off when I was 10 from to many perms and braids.
I;m natural now and have been for a minute. Never did the big chop. Just slowly been cutting my hair.
My hair has NEVER been long or healthy. If I ever have kids I will not process thier hair either.
