I went and saw this movie with my step-mom yesterday and absolutely loved it. I didn’t know much going into it except that it was about Jamie Foxx was supposed to be freed slave turned bounty hunter trying to get his wife back.
What I didn’t know was that it was going to be funny. I laughed so hard so many times!!!
That blue Austin Powers-esque suit that he wore in that scene above had me in stitches for a good 5 minutes.
Don’t get me wrong, there were some serious points in the movie and I know that those were a bit of a hot topic with critics, Spike Lee in particular.
Lee said that he was going to protest the movie because of the excessive use of the N-word and my jaw dropped.
I know the man who was behind ‘New Jack City‘ wasn’t saying anything about excessive use of the N-word.
This was a period piece, and as much as we dislike it that’s what black people were called back then. Leo even said that he had a hard time with that part of the role. In fact, I think the only other role he’s used that word in was ‘Gangs of New York‘, another period piece. I think that Quinton was just trying to be historically accurate and that either way there were going to be critics; whether he used the word and was historically accurate or if he didn’t and wasn’t accurate.
I think that Spike was just upset that QT didn’t ask him to be a part of the movie, that he knows is going to be successful. He did the same thing with Tyler Perry once his movies (and later shows) became successful.
But back to my review!
I give the movie a solid B. I would’ve given it an A but QT’s standard blood and gore always starts his movie at a B for me. I definitely want to see the movie again and will probably take my boyfriend next time.
