I wore a shower cap today for the first time in about 4 years! Having natural hair has given me the luxury of not having to avoid running water on my head like the plague and I have definitely taken advantage of that. It doesn’t faze me if I get a bit of water on my hair when it’s raining outside, my curls welcome that moisture, and if I get some water on my hair in the shower no big deal. Tonight it was different thought.
I usually get my hair straightened for a length check every quarter, and get it trimmed once a year. Well that unexpectedly happened this past Thursday. My cousin, who’s a beautician, was over another cousin’s place and I saw her straightened hair and told her that I thought it was cute (which doesn’t happen often…lol!) and she told me that she could straighten mine. I took her up on the offer and after dinner she plugged in her Marcel and went to work. An hour later my hair was straightened and trimmed and I loved it…for about 30 minutes before it started to rebel. I’m gonna let you guys in on a little secret. Like me, my hair likes to test/buck the system a bit. I don’t mean it likes to break laws, it just has a mind of it’s own. Even when I was getting perms on a regular basis It would still get puffy due to all the humidity by the second week of my perm. It was like my hair was telling me that it preferred to be in it’s natural state. Well, it took me a while, but in 2007 I finally listened and decided to give up the creamy crack and I haven’t looked back at it since.
Since going natural I’ve had my hair colored 4 times and rocked a myriad of protective styles. I love to experiment with it and watch it grow long and healthy. I love not being tied down to certain styles and ducking and dodging under awnings or into buildings at the first sight of inclement weather. I love the versatility of it and most importantly I love the fact that I’m no longer conforming to what society thinks my hair should look like…but that’s another blog post.
Anywho! I feel like I’m rambling and that’s probably my cue to wrap up this bad boy. I have to be up for work in about 6 hours so I’m going to bid y’all adieu and say buenos noches!
