Okay, I got my last perm in December 2007 and since then I haven’t looked back. I’ve ditched the creamy crack and I’m never going back. I did a long transition, cutting off permed ends as I went and it took me about a year before I was 100% natural. The first time I looked in the mirror and saw all my pretty curls I almost cried. This was the hair that God intended for me to have, the hair She’d given me from birth and the hair I’d been chemically fighting since I’d gotten my first perm all those years ago. It wasn’t my mother’s fault though, she was just going along with what society deemed ‘appropriate’ for black hair…but I digress, that’s another blog post.
Like many other natural ladies I fell victim to being a product junkie. I subscribe to many natural hair blogs and forums and after finding bloggers out there with similar hair types to myself I started buying products they’d recommend. Sometimes the products worked for me, sometimes they didn’t. But that’s the way it works, what works on one person’s head might not always work on another. I still look to those bloggers for ideas, but I’m starting to find out what works for me.
One of the good things about natural hair is that I can try out a product and if I don’t like it I could just wash my hair and start over. I like to try out hair puddings and conditioners, but I never thought about trying out a hair mayonnaise until I was at the Dollar Tree about 3 weeks ago. I usually make my own deep conditioner and use it weekly on my hair, but when I saw this jar of hair mayonnaise and checked out the ingredients I thought ‘why not? it’s only a buck, and if it sucks it’s not a big loss’. Well needless to say it worked…VERY WELL!! I took it home and used it as a deep conditioner, I put it on my hair like you would a perm and put a shower cap on, a bandana on on top of the shower cap and left the hair mayonnaise on my head for like 6 hours. I even took a nap with it on my hair. Now before I hear gasps from you guys, this is the same thing I do with my deep conditioners. I usually do them on Sunday afternoons, while watching the Texans play, and let it sit on my head for at least 4 hours before I wash it and condition it and do my protective style of the week.
When I washed the hair mayonnaise out of my hair I couldn’t believe how it felt. My hair was smooth, untangled, soft and my curls were soooo bouncy!! And this was just after a shampooing!! I was so excited to finish conditioning it with my Aussie Moist and flat twisting it. It was super easy to finish detangling, it took like 2 brushes through (I use one of those big weave brushes) and put a little hair pudding on my curls before I flat twisted them.
The hair mayonnaise did exactly what it was supposed to do and I recommend it to everyone. My hair was super moisturized and soft. I’m going to post a picture of the product below. It’s sold at Dollar Tree stores along with the rest of the line for a dollar each!! Check it out!
